Holidaying close to home, but no idea what to do? We have gathered the best tips for relaxing activities and the nicest sights in the region for you.

Enjoy a weekend away in Berg en Dal,
the green 'back garden' of Nijmegen.

Nature in the Rijk van Nijmegen

Hotel-restaurant De Wolfsberg lies in green, natural surroundings in the rolling landscape of Groesbeek, about 10 minutes from the oldest city in the country: Nijmegen. For anyone who loves being outdoors, the Rijk van Nijmegen is the ideal holiday destination. Nature here is rich and varied, with woods, fens, polders, dykes, rivers and heathland. The best-known nature areas near hotel-restaurant De Wolfsberg are the Groesbeekse bos, De Duivelsberg, De Mookerheide, De Ooijpolder and the Hatertse en Overasseltse Vennen. Thanks to the central location of De Wolfsberg you will be standing in all these beautiful places in no time, and they are absolutely worth visiting during a relaxed weekend away (though longer is of course just as welcome).

Cycling, mountain biking and walking

Park your car free of charge on the grounds of De Wolfsberg: the perfect start and finish point for a walk or bike ride through the wooded surroundings full of hills, climbs, descents, Gelderland rivers and green views. The Rijk van Nijmegen offers a variety of routes for walking, running, cycling, road cycling or mountain biking. Whatever you fancy.

We hire out a number of our own electric bikes for €22.50 per day.  For more information about bike hire, please contact our reception at info@dewolfsberg.nl or T 024-397 1327.

The wine region of the Netherlands

A remarkable fact: with some 25 hectares of vineyard, Groesbeek can rightly claim the title ‘the wine village of the Netherlands’. Thanks to the special soil type and the hills, the village is the ideal place for 6 winegrowers to make a quality red or white wine. So for a good glass you do not have to travel to Italy or France at all. Even on a holiday close to home there is plenty for the wine lover to taste. Would you like to visit these vineyards for a tasting one day? Hop on a bike at De Wolfsberg and follow the Wijnroute Groesbeek through the hilly region. Are you staying at our hotel on the last weekend of September? Then be sure to take in the Nederlandse Wijnfeesten in Groesbeek!

Would you like more information about wine walks and tastings? Then take a look at the website of the Nederlands Wijnbouwcentrum.

Museums

De Wolfsberg is not only an ideal destination for walkers, cyclists, road cyclists and mountain bikers, but also lies among a number of museums well worth seeing, with themes such as nature, history, art, culture and war. Broaden your knowledge and visit, during your weekend away, the MuZIEum or Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen or the Vrijheidsmuseum in Groesbeek, for example. Our tip: the Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal, with a large collection of African art.

Liberation Route

There was heavy fighting in Groesbeek during the war. Operation Market Garden took place in September 1944 and almost 8,000 paratroopers of the American 82nd Airborne Division landed near Groesbeek. With Liberation Route Groesbeek you can now discover and experience the route the Allies took for yourself. You step into a 1944 Dodge and enthusiastic guide Bert tells you, using photos, audio and video, about the ammunition depot opposite De Wolfsberg, also known as the ‘bommenbos’, among other things, and takes you to various historic places in the region. Truly recommended for anyone who wants to discover more about the story of the area.

Would you like to book such a tour? Then take a look at the options on the website of Liberation Tour Groesbeek.

The oldest city in the Netherlands

It is clear that Groesbeek is the place to unwind, but if you fancy a taste of lively city life during your weekend away, Nijmegen is the place to go. About ten minutes’ drive from De Wolfsberg in Groesbeek lies the oldest city in the country, full of character and history. Today it is best known as a student city and home of the world-famous Vierdaagse, but thanks to two thousand years of history there is plenty of cultural heritage to discover as well. Take a walk through the atmospheric streets, visit the city beach on the river Waal, browse the charming boutiques and enjoy trendy lunch spots and bars.

Top theatre and music

Are you looking for live entertainment? Nijmegen has everything for evenings full of entertainment. Sing along at concerts in the centuries-old Concertgebouw De Vereeniging, see a performance at the Stadsschouwburg or De Lindenberg, watch a film at arthouse cinema Lux Nijmegen, or dance into the small hours at music venue Doornroosje. Boating on the Mookerplas

One of the many lakes bordering the river Maas is the Mookerplas. It lies at the top of Noord-Limburg and is in fact two lakes connected to each other: de Grote Siep and het Mooks kanaal.

Thanks to the open connection with the Maas, this is a perfect location for water sports. Hire a canoe, sloop or sailing boat and drift about on the water between Milsbeek and Plasmolen, or head out onto the Maas. Sail past the loveliest farms, meadows, cows and horses towards Cuijk and moor up to take a dip. De Grote Siep has a wide sandy beach, a spacious lawn and a few welcoming beach pavilions. For water lovers this is paradise. And no more than 10 minutes away.

Curious about the rates for boat hire? Take a look at De Dolfijn in Mook. Book in good time.

A day on the golf course

Fancy hitting a few balls during your (mini) holiday on one of the many holes the Rijk van Nijmegen has to offer? Then plan a day at the golf course a stone’s throw from hotel-restaurant De Wolfsberg. Thanks to the differences in height in the landscape you have a stunning view all the way to Germany. You can get there on foot or by bike. Pure enjoyment!

Would you like to reserve a tee time or book your first golf lesson? Then check the website of Golfbaan Het Rijk van Nijmegen.

Bathing in the thermal baths

You can relax and unwind to the full in the thermal water of Scandic Sanadome or Thermen Berendonck. De Wolfsberg is a good base for combining a wellness day with the peace and nature of Berg en Dal. You will find both luxury wellness centres 15 minutes away.

Indoor pools, outdoor pools, whirlpools, a saltwater bath, a steam room, saunas, a sun lawn and massage rooms. Everything is there for a wonderfully relaxed holiday. You will feel on top of the world here.

A breathtakingly beautiful experience for beginners. Fancy coming along for a flight? You can! Check the website of the Nijmeegse Aeroclub for the dates.
